A few years back CBS and CW were in talks to bring back the beloved TV series Charmed. The first synopsis was written as a prequel to the original Charmed but was soon dismissed after so much backlash from fans.
The backlash continues however because most fans wanted the show to continue with the original cast.
We all loved the idea of Charmed. There was no other series like it. The chemistry, the mythology and the family, it was a show we grew to love.
We are moving into a new generation now it may seem too soon for a reboot but CW and CBS own the title “Charmed” so they are well within their rights to bring the show back for a new generation. A lot of fans don’t understand the legal aspect of TV networks and their rights to some shows, some even saying “Why didn’t they just call it something else, this isn’t Charmed” or “This show is trash, you can’t fool the fans with this”
It’s been 12 years since the original aired their last episode on May 21st 2006. It left us in tears but hopeful for the future. We tried to move past Charmed and replace it with other witch shows like “The Secret Circle” and “Witches of East End” however these shows failed and ended soon after.
The CW and Charmed Reboot cast responds to the fan backlash with this article.
“This fall, The CW is launching a reboot of the classic WB supernatural series Charmed, but not without controversy. Original Charmed star Holly Marie Combs condemned the project for diminishing the work she and her co-stars Shannen Doherty, Alyssa Milano and Rose McGowan did on the series. Doherty said she was offended by The CW describes the new series as a “feminist” reboot, which she took as an implication that the original wasn’t. Fans even started the hashtag #StopCharmedReboot on Twitter.
The CW president Mark Pedowitz responded to the backlash during a conference call with reporters Thursday morning, saying, “Hopefully they would give this new cast a chance. It is not quite the same yet there are many similarities. Hopefully, they will give it a shot. We are happy with who we cast. We think it’s a nice mix. [Showrunner] Jennie Snyder Urman has reimagined it somewhat. I can only say to fans before you make a decision, watch the series.”
The reboot stars Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz and Sarah Jeffrey as sisters Macy, Mel and Maggie Vera, who have similar powers to the original series’ Halliwell sisters. The premise of the reboot is the same as the original — sisters with magical powers battle evil supernatural forces — but the sisters are now of Hispanic descent, one of them is a lesbian and the setting has been moved from San Francisco to the fictional town of Hilltown.
Charmed will air Sundays at 9/8c on The CW”

In the show Charmed was a power source, one that the sisters could tap into making them the strongest supernatural beings in the world, this was one of the reasons why they were a big threat to demons warlocks and other evil beings of the underworld. It took a strong sisterhood bond to unite the witches to be able to harness the Charmed power. This has been proven throughout the series when Prue died and the Charmed ones lost their ability to tap into the power until Page came along. Or the time another set three witches tried to steal the book of Shadows and take over the Charmed Power.
The point I’m trying to make here is that Charmed was never just about the sisters it was a force of good magic that any three sister witches could tap into if their bond was strong enough to use it.
I don’t think the new show or the network is trying to discredit all the hard work Holly, Shannon, Alyssa, and Rose put into the original show and I hope they find a way to honor them somehow in the series.
As a die-hard 100 times over Charmed fan I say give it a try, we owe it to our selves. Only true Charmed fans can be the judge of the new show and the new generation will love it for what it is. We have to give it a try, just like we did when the original show aired on October 7th, 1998.
