You remember that cartoon series from the 90’s about a group of teenagers fighting to protect the planet from pollution?
Captain Planet and the Planeteers revolved around five teens who were gifted with rings from the ancient spirit of Earth Gaia after she awoke to the news that the Earth was dying. Each ring had a different ability related to the elements, resulting in Planateers wielding the power of Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, and Heart. They protected the planet from Eco-Villains, but When their power wasn’t enough to stem the tide they could combine their powers to call on the hero Captain Planet.
Yes…. Captain Planet and the “Planeteers” will be hitting the big screen. Produced by Leonardo Dicaprio’s Appian Way Productions (Wolf of Wallstreet, Live by Night, Robin Hood, and distributed by Paramount Pictures.
Leonardo, has been a big advocate for climate change issues in the world with his 2016 documentary “Before the Flood”. So a movie like this would seem appropriate.
The new movie will be based on the screenplay by Glen Powell and Jono Matt. Glenn states that Captain Planet will be slightly darker than the cartoon version.
Glen is a fan of the 90’s cartoon series and it holds a special place in his heart and memory.
“I mean, they’ve tried to make it into a superhero movie before, but they kind of did like an earnest take and ours is way more subversive and fun and like dark and irreverent,” Powell told THR
“Sometimes you have to think of these things logically. If you have a blue superhero with a green mullet, you can’t do like an earnest take on that. You have to go at it from a fun [direction].”
You can see the potential in the premise, especially what’s going on today with the climate change debate. Powell is hard at work writing the screenplay, Powell mentioned that combining the outlandish elements to the serious undertone of the film deemed time consuming but he hopes the finished product will be rewarding.
“It’s been an interesting process and it’s taken a long time, but now we’re getting that up and going and we’re really stoked about it” Powell said.
There is currently no full synopsis or cast selections for the film, and it’s been 2 years since DiCaprio announced that he would produce it.
Either way I’ have taken it upon my self to fan cast some of the main characters I think would do well for the film.
Whoopi Goldberg voiced Gaia for the first 3 seasons of the cartoon, she could pull off Mother Earth in the film.
As for the others, I chose a unique selection of individuals I believe would do well taking on these rolls.
I have also fan-cast my top 3 villains for the film as well.
I believe some of the characters would be slightly reimagined to work on film without taking away their core characteristics.
Currently there is no projected release date for the film. I predict that the film would be released sometime in 2021 since there still isn’t any further information on its production status and it seems like Glen is still working out some of the specifics in the script and screenplay.
Do you think the movie should be a trilogy? Or should it be a one time feature film?
Anyone else have the theme song stuck in their head now?
“The power is yours!”
