For a long time Marvel Studios has been playing it safe with keeping their movies rated PG-13. Avoiding some suggestive themes, and keeping things sorta “family friendly”. Marvel Studios is owned by Disney, so you would think that wholesome vibe has to remain, but that’s not really the case.
Marvel is moving on to having more female lead solo and group films in the future with Captain Marvel joining them in March.
Although Marvel Studios hasn’t officially announced the Black Widow movie it is in pre production. Meaning it is in its early writing and development phase. Cate Shortland is set to direct the film, with Scarlett Johansson to reprise her role as the Black Widow. The movie is also projected to be released in late 2020.
A lot of people arn’t as excited about Black Widow having a solo movie because she doest have any real “power”. However not a lot of people know her back story and what was actually done to her. We only see her as she is now.
Natalia Romanova’s history is pretty dark, she was an orphan and was sent to an agency for girls where she was brainwashed, then trained in combat at the covert “Red Room” facility. Natalia also went through the sterilization process so she could never have children. While being trained as an assassin she was also given abilities similar to Captain America as the facility who brainwashed her also tried to reproduce the super solder serum, however it was not as strong as Captain America’s serum. She is also biotechnologicly and psycho-technologicly enhanced due to the brainwashing and mental conditioning.
Here is a clip from Avengers Age of Ultron where Natalia gets mind manipulated by the Scarlet Witch that forces her to see her past.
The movie Red Sparrow staring Jennifer Lawrence has a similar story line to what happens with Natalia in the comics. Many people were already saying how similar Red Sparrow was to flashbacks of Natalia’s early life in Avengers Age of Ultron as a ballerina, and being trained.
Red Sparrow was rated R due to its content and premise. Maybe since Black Widow has a similar story line it may be a good idea to allow her movie to be what it’s meant to be. It would be difficult to explain why your 12 year old can’t go see Black Widow.
Disney owns other film labels like Miramax and Touchstone who have made R rated movies. Also Disney just acquired Fox and they are going to continue to make Deadpool movies, so allowing Marvel Studios to do the same is not out of the question.
Some of the Marvel comic stories are more suggestive than people realize, and they are watered down a bit for the movies. If Marvel Studios and Disney go through with this type of movie it would be a bold road to go down, and a first time for Marvel Studios.
