Is The “Sokovia Accords” Still a Thing?

Remember when the government wanted to control enhanced humans with the Sokovia Accords back during Civil War?

Basically, the Sokovia Accords was approved by 117 countries, it stated that the Avengers shall no longer be a private organization. They must instead operate under the supervision of the United Nations panel, only when the panel deems they are needed.

They were legal documents put into place to regulate the activities of enhanced individuals, specifically those who work for government agencies such as S.H.I.E.L.D or private organizations like the Avengers.

In 2016 there was a terrorist attack in Lagos, Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of 26 people including the death of Wakanda King Ta’Chaka. The attack was viewed as a public relations disaster. Because of this, the international community called on the United Nations to create a system of accountability.

Everything that the Avengers were involved in surrounding disasters and destruction from the attack on New York to an entire city being completely destroyed in the sky, lead the Avengers to become divided because of their views on public policy.

Steve Rogers was against the Accords because he felt that it was a bad idea to have the government control when and where the Avengers and other enhanced individuals would go and do if there were an emergency. Tony Stark wanted to take responsibility and sign the Accords because he felt responsible for most of the occurrences.

This is where the division began, Team Iron Man, and Team Cap. Because of the disagreement and because Steve and Bucky were on a mission to find out who was responsible for the terrorist attack. They first had to go up against Iron Man and his team who tried to stop him because they felt that he was wrong about who he accused. Steve was also acting against the newly instated Accords.

After the events during Civil War, most of Steves team were arrested, later Captain America visited the Raft to break them out, this is what caused them to become fugitives.

Vision and Wanda fled the country. Vision learned an ability to hide his android form to blend in with humans. Steve, Natasha, and Sam were on secret missions taking out arms dealers. Clint Barton and Scott Lang both took a deal to be on house arrest for their involvement with Captain America and the fight at the Germany airport.

During Infinity War when Wanda and Vision were attacked by Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive two children of Thanos. They were rescued by Steve, Natasha, and Sam. The team retreated back to the Avengers HQ and James Rhodes realized that the Accords had seriously weakened the Avengers. Thaddeus Ross wanted to arrest the now fugitive Avengers. The stakes were already too high and the priority issue was that aliens were after the mind stone that was still in Vision’s forehead, there was no time to waste, but we all know how that story turned out.

So now what? Avengers Endgame may or may not deal with the consequences of the Avengers breaking the law but will the Sokovia Accords still be a problem in the future, or will the United Nations officials repeal the law because of its adverse effects and the price they had to pay for not allowing the Avengers to do the job they vowed to do together.

Or will the time travel theory hold true and create an alternate reality where the Accords were never created?

Is the world in Avengers Endgame a lawless one post-snap?

It would be interesting to see how the Russo bothers dealt with that problem even with half the world gone. Families did see their loved ones and friends disintegrate right before their eyes, this could have affected that world tremendously in a way we don’t know about yet.

Guess we will have to wait and see how the epic 11-year saga concludes with Avengers Endgame.

In theatres on April 26th.
