Marvel Studios Avengers Endgame is a lot of things, but is it Oscar worthy?
The studio had a screening with the Acadamy for potentially having it nominated for best picture.
This is the second Marvel film to be considered for an academy award nomination after Black Panther which was also nominated for Best Picture last year.
Superhero movies used to be looked at as “sell out” films because of their potential to earn a lot from the box office and not being very good. Avengers Endgame earned over 1 Billion dollars in its opening weekend, it was well received by critics and audiences.
The film itself does more than just be a good superhero movie. It was very well written, well directed and well structured. The performances were top notch from our Marvel cast.
A bunch of A list actors has spoken out in the past, saying that the people who take roles to be in a superhero film do it for the money and there’s no real acting in those kinds of films.
Over the past 11+ years, superhero films have paved the way for better storytelling in that genre, developed creative ways to use these kinds of characters, and introduced a new way to create a film with outlandish plots and themes that make sense and tell stories that audiences can relate too.
Realistically these kinds of films offer a bigger challenge for actors who portray any kind of character in the film. Sometimes actors have to imagine they are seeing something that’s not there. Some have to perform some stunts at times and be physically able to do some things. This may not always be the case now thanks to CGI characters and stunt people doing all the heavy work, but still, actors have to have a wild imagination and be ultimately very good at what they do to be believable on screen.
Robert Downy Junior, Chris Evens, Scarlet Johansson, Mark Ruffalo Karen Gillian, Brie Larson, Don Cheadle, and others, put on an amazing performance, some of the best I’ve seen from the MCU. If the studio thinks the film deserves a seat at the table then we are seeing a major change in movie making.
