The Year Of UNORIGINAL Films

We are living in an era of remakes prequels, sequels, and spinoffs.

Majority of this summers blockbuster films and future films coming are not original. Movies that are being made now are either remade versions of old movies, movies adapted from books, videogames, or comics.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of material out there that is just begging to be made into a movie. Most of it we are here for. However, it is beginning to feel like filmmakers have run out of ideas.

Here is a list of some of the unoriginal films that are in theaters now or coming out later this year.

  • Shaft
  • Terminator: Dark Fate
  • Godzilla: King of the Monsters
  • Hobbs and Shaw (Spin-off of Fast and Furious)
  • Spider-Man Far From Home (Tom Holland’s second standalone Marvel film)
  • Dark Phoenix (Continuation of X-Men movies)
  • Toy Story 4
  • MIB International
  • Lion King (Live Action\CGI version)
  • Aladdin (Live Action version)
  • Childs Play (Reboot)
  • Charlies Angels (2019)

We have Disney remaking every cartoon movie they have in their vault. Warner Brothers are continuing to make DC comic book movies, other film studios are adapting books, cartoons, and videogames into blockbuster film versions.

The only completely original film that has come out so far this year was “Ma” starring Octavia Spencer. All the other hot films aren’t really that original.

What is interesting though is that some people are here for remakes and redos. Then you have people who are completely against it. None the less, I believe that either filmmaker are getting lazy, or the studios and the distributing company’s who own the studios and production companies are in it for the money.

You have several stories out there from books to videogames that are literally cinematic gold. All they need is the right writers to adapt them into screenplays and scripts and from there, its nothing else to do but pitch them to the studio and the movie goes into production.

Other unoriginal movie that is in the pre-production phase right now is the live-action “Captain Planet” film being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and his company Appian Way Productions.
