We’ve known for a while that Scarlett Johansson would be reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff in the upcoming Marvel Studio film “Black Widow” even before it was officially announced.
It was strange for many fans when news broke that a “Black Widow” film was being made, considering the character made the ultimate sacrifice, by giving her life for the soul stone in Avengers: Endgame.
“Black Widow” will be the first phase four film to debut in May of 2020. However, details about the film suggest that it will be taking place after Captain America: Civil War and before Avengers Infinity War.
Remember there is a large gap of time between when those films take place. An MCU prelude comic suggests that Nat, Cap, and Sam eventually team up to take down arms dealers before having to rescue Wanda and Vision from being attacked by two members of the black order during the Infinity War.
There are is no confirmation that Captain America and Falcon will be in Black Widow, however, there are rumors that Hawkeye may make an appearance, and we may get that mysterious Budapest scene we’ve been craving since it was mentioned in 2012.
What could Natasha be up to during that time even before she teams up with Cap and Falcon?
Black Widow Plot Theory
After the ramifications of the Sokovia Accords, there was no follow up with the united nations decision to register all enhanced individuals in the MCU. Natasha may be undercover again as a spy uncovering something unknown. While she is on her missions the story may jump back in time in flashbacks to tell a story about Natasha’s past, similar to the memory flashbacks she had during Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Taskmaster has also been mentioned to be the main antagonist in the film, another long-awaited character to join the MCU. Taskmaster has a similar personality like our beloved Deadpool in the comics however we do not know if his persona will mimic Wade’s.
It’s looking like the cast is almost complete since the film is already shooting.
Here is the cast list for “Black Widow”
Scarlett Johansson – Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow)
Florence Pugh – Yelena
David Harbour – Alexei / The Red Guardian
Rachel Weisz – Melina
Ray Winstone – (Unknown)
O-T Fagbenle – Mason
It is still unknown who will be playing Taskmaster and knowing how Marvel usually introduces its cast, we may not find out who’s under the mask until the film releases.
The film does feel out of place as a phase 4 film considering we have completed the Infinity Saga and this film takes place during events of phase 3. The response the film is receiving after finding out the timeline of the movie is mixed and confusing. They told us we’re supposed to move on to a new phase in our lives, however somehow, we still end up back in the past.
I’m sure “Black Widow” will be a great film, only time will tell just how this film will startup to the MCU’s phase four without feeling late to the party.
